Album thing

Tue Jan 6, 2009, 11:11 AM
Ok I'm doing this album thing that the #CLers are doing.

I'm choosing the album Watershed by progressive metal band Opeth.

I will write this as I listen to it.

1. The first song is Coil. It begins acoustically as Opeth often does. An interesting slightly-dissonant guitar part is happening as lyrics happen. Ok a chorus thing has begun, it has a pretty sweet guitar thing going on. I'm realizing its about lost love or something. Oh, this part is good (1:25 ish). He has memories of the past, I guess. Some chick is singing. This band has no chicks. How did this happen. She's singing the counterpart chorus to the guy. Ok now there's a growling thunder sound to end the song.

2. Heir Apparent is the next song. It starts with doomy slow guitars doing a pretty sweet riff. The drums are slow and cymbally. It goes all quiet. shh. (This is an 8 minute song by the way). Piano is happening. I think its about to get distor- yep its distorted again. Doom still. Ok pick slide to speed metal and growling. He's saying ghostly things. Dissonent Opeth-like chords abound. Cool guitar riffs and another guy doing a guitar solo on top of it. At 3:30 it goes to a sweet acoustic part. And now a different one. Drums come in fast and it goes back to speed metal. He growls some more. Music suddenly stops, woah. Okay, clean guitars now. They play a cool melody. Drums are doing some cool things. Music stops again (5:20) and then goes speed metal again. This song has a lot of this. Okay it breaks into some slower, awesome chord progression. 6:30. This part is really good. More growling, I think he's given up on trying to communicate though. Ear rape now, fading into some more awesome chords that we heard before. Sounds like an outtro at 7:30. Opeth is pretty good at buildups and transitions. Song ends with a siren-sounding guitar

3. The Lotus Eater. Begins with guy humming a bizarre melody over some like... bassoons. Ok now fast drums over slow guitaring. Vocals are cool at this part. Something else happens. It's good. Vocals are awesome. The song changes into - man this is getting harder and harder to explain. Music stops 1:45 and fades back in. "You are stuck in a route of confusion. Changing and waiting and seeking the truth of it all". Music stops, then some wind instruments make an inhuman chord. Guitar comes back. Drums are still blast-beating. Vocals go from clean to growls every 3 seconds. Really weird guitar melody. Its cool though. 4:10 the song calms down. There is a flute and a cut guitar doing a slow melody. The guitar is now normal-sounding. This is pretty sweet. The guitar gets some distortion and moves 6 feet to the left inexplicably. Another guitar joins in. Some insane chord. Song picks up at 5:50. Drums are really cool here. There have been no vocals for a while. Metal time. Weird vocals saying weird things. This sounds like Opeth. It is Opeth. Music stops and it sounds like a bunch of people talking in a bar or something. They're not speaking english. There is a violin slowly breaking in the background. It ends.

4. Burden. There is piano going on. There is some synth'd organ or something as well. Also a guitar but its not doing much, just hanging out. Ok there is a slow chord progression with slow drums, all acoustic-y. The vocals are pretty cool "A broken rhyme I had underlined/There's an ocean of sorrow in you" They're big on sorrow. This song is pretty sad sounding. The guitars do some cool things and get distorted when he's not singing. Minor chords abound. He's singing that "Ahhhhhhhhhhhh" thing he sings when he runs out of lyrics. Its pretty cool though. Another guitar joins us and plays a solo-y thing. Its real good. Oh, another guitar plays a similar solo-y thing. They appear to be switching off. A duel, if you will. They're playing at the same time now. This song has had a pretty consistent drumbeat all the way through. That is a rare thing. Okay the amps and the drums left. Now its just two guitars playing independent things that sound really nice together. They begin detuning their guitars as they play. What? They're just. They're just fucking with the tuning knobs. This sounds terrible (awesome). Ok Opeth. Whatever. This goes on for a while. Mike begins laughing. The song ends.

5. Porcelain Heart. Starts distorted and doom-y. The drums are doing slow things. Ok now there's some double bass pedal going on. Distortion stops and a clean guitar plays a melody. A piano joins him. "I lost all I had (that April day)/I turned to my friends (nothing to say)/I wrote down a name (and read it twice)". Music stops - "I wallowed in shame." Doom metal attacks us like an aggressive analogy. Ok it goes back to doing what it was doing before. This might be a pattern. "I said that I loved (eternal schemes)/I cling to my past (like childish dreams)/I promised to stay (and held my breath)/I went far away." Awesome guitar thing. Oh man. This is great. (3:30). "Ahhhhhhhhhhh". Powerful shit. Ok. Music stops. Acoustic guitar not doing much. Okay he starts singing again. He sings a melody and when he's out of lyrics a clarinet or something replaces his voice. He's singing again. Lyrics are fairly confusing, I assume they're really deep :S Ok back to that sweet part I mentioned before. "Ahhhhhhhhh". It fades out.

6. Hessian Peel. Really low bass note. Slow guitar soloing going on. Ok now two different guitar riffs are happening. He sings for a bit, something about mothers dying. Now there's flutes. This is pretty mellow. Now he sings in reverse. Seriously. What. Drums join us for the party. Violin. Still pretty mellow but very awesome. The vocals are kinda weird. There are lots of instruments playing. It's pretty nice. Distort the guitar, they play something low and awesome. A second guitar plays a harmonized version. Now there's guitar playing something higher. And a piano plays something totally dissonant at 5:20. Beeping. Death metal now w/ growling. The guitars are playing something really great. They do this a lot. Palm muted stuff, 7:00. There are more reversed lyrics. The distortion is gone. Now they are forward and sung in a weird manner. "Ahhhhhhhhhhhh". What. Lmao. That-ok. Back to what it had been doing. And now a distorted chord. Drums are doing things on the toms. Some more death metal now. Last 30 seconds are beeping.

7. Hex Omega. Immediately there is distorted guitars and double bass drumming. It fades off soon though, into clarinets/clean guitars. Clean vocals are sung softly, "Two years/In your heart/One moment of doubt." Drumming begins. Harmonized singing: "Two lives/Torn apart/One second from now." Distortion engage. Cool riff, then it returns to quiet part. More lyrics happen. Its mostly just the singing + hi-hat. Distorted riffs again when he finishes the stanza. It is quiet, there is an electric piano playing. It is a bizarre sound, for Opeth. A return to the original clean guitar part. He sings emotionally, with an overdrive filter or something. A distorted guitar in my right ear and nothing else. Ok now its doom metal. Its real good. A tone for the last 10 seconds.

8. Derelict Herds. Sweet guitar riff in a bizarre time signature. Actually maybe it isn't but its a weird beat. I can't really count it. Anyway, I wasn't paying attention to writing this, now its drums and him singing with weird filters. Guitar is doing something weird. Oh, sweet a slide solo. Nice. Now a riff with lots of chord changes. It fades into some growling and distorted guitars playing another weird beat. This goes on a while. At 4:30 it changes to clean vocals and one of the guitars doing something random in the background. The vocals have some crazy filters, it sounds really cool. Intense guitar riff that has like 2-octave jumps between notes.

I'm not going to do the bonus tracks. One of them is a cover, the other is in Swedish.

Opeth is amazing. You should listen to them. Watershed was a good album. So are Ghost Reveries and Blackwater Park
